Winner of the French 2019 Arab Literature Prize, this novel is based on a true event in Cairo in 2001 when 52 men were arrested in a police raid of a floating disco called the Queen Boat. The men were beaten and tortured. The book follows the main character, Hani Mahfouz during the aftermath of his arrest as he reflects on his life as a gay man in Egypt, his arranged marriage, and his family. This novel was previously shortlisted for the 2017 International Prize for Arabic Fiction.
