In Kafr al-Tin, a woman lives wearing a clay cloak that conceals her face and covers her body after her death. In a simple rural village, male oppression is evident, and women are lost in a maze of poverty, sex, and religion. On the verge of poverty, they abandon their dignity and serve in the mayor's house, simply because they need the twenty piasters they receive daily in exchange for their cleaning efforts and their refusal to tolerate any physical harassment. Poverty is the gateway to their falling into the arms of a man they don't want. In the name of religion, this encounter assumes a legitimate framework. In her novel, Nawal El Saadawi weaves together the realities of rural women, from the realities of women like Zainab, Fathia, Nafisa, and others, and explores how authority (the mayor), religion (the mosque imam), and ignorance (the barber) combine to create a society in which women are merely a means of enjoyment.
