Victoria grew up in a world divided by appearances. She had to contend not only with the struggles faced by any ordinary middle-class Egyptian girl—the daily grind of making ends meet, educational hurdles, and the fear bred by the ever-deteriorating atmosphere of the Egyptian street—but also with a distinct triad of challenges: alienation from her provincial hometown, far removed from the capital; the bitter loss of the most important person in her life; and the dual existence she was compelled to lead as a Coptic citizen—harboring a multitude of fears deep within, while surrounded by dangers underscored by a bombing here or an accusation of apostasy there.
