After Miri the Circassian's family migrated from Russia to Bulgaria during the era of the Ottoman Empire, circumstances compelled them to migrate once again—this time to Alexandria—where they embarked upon a new life in Egypt. Here, set against that specific era, we observe the succession of generations within Sheikh Salama’s family and witness the unfolding details of Miri the Circassian’s life during a pivotal period in Egypt’s history. The novel is set against the backdrop of the British occupation of Egypt and the Palestine War. Through the lens of these passing generations, we gain insight into the daily lives and inner workings of ordinary Egyptian families of that time, and discover how deeply human emotions—love, loss, and longing—played a fundamental role in shaping the lives of the Egyptian people.
