South is a comprehensive and evocative title for that part of the Iraqi map encompassing Zubair, Tanuma, Ashar, Abu al-Khasib, and other areas, collectively known as Basra. It is also the social backdrop for the characters and events in Dana Ghali's book, which comprises two narratives: the first, "Steps," in two parts, and the second, "The Room's Manifesto," a series of narrative fragments that recall childhood, adolescence, and the concerns of young women in a bygone era, perhaps before the successive wars. This was a time when people harbored genuine dreams of changing their reality through revolutionary movements, party education, and public awareness campaigns, followed by the first devastating war, the catastrophic Iran-Iraq War of the 1980s, which took place on the outskirts of Basra.
