This biographical novel tells the story of Shajar al-Durr, a former child slave who would become the a ruler of Egypt in the 13th century. She did not take the title of Sultana, the feminine form of Sultan, but rather chose to be known as Sultan. She is known for her wisdom in political affairs and her rule marked the end of the Ayyubid reign and the start of the Mamluks era.
