Over the course of half a century, the novel tells the story of the life of Shekh Awad, one of the tribal sheikhs in the countryside city of Kut in southern Iraq. His daughter, Iqbal, was a girl whose dreams went beyond the borders of the village. Despite tribal customs, Iqbal would be instrumental in the intellectual advancement of Iraqi youth and new ideological movements in Iraq.
