Based on actual events, this novel tells the story of the kidnapping and murder of Muhammad Husayn al-Dhahabi, an Egyptian scholar who was an outspoken critic of the local militant jihadist movement. On July 3, 1977, Dhahabi was kidnapped by a radical group and held hostage with demands for the release of imprisoned members of the militant group. When their demands were not met, Dhahabi was executed. Following his execution, the government of Anwar Sadat cracked down on militant organizations in Egypt. Longlisted for the Sheikh Zayed Book Award for Literature 2022.
