A brief, intense, and multi-layered novel that begins subtly through the eyes of a child who holds the hand of his mother fleeing an abusive and suspicious father and unfolds during a breathless few hours of armed confrontation between security forces and Islamists -- a real event that took place in Cairo in 1989. The author, who lives in London, was awarded a Sawiris Cultural Award 2022 for this novel. In a fury of controversy, he accepted the award for one day and then gave it back and asked the organizers to remove his name from the list of winners.
