Nawal el Saadawi is an Egyptian physician, feminist, author, and activist. She is founder of the Arab Women's Solidarity Association and co-founded the Arab Association for Human Rights. A survivor of genital mutilation, she is an outspoken proponent for women's rights. Considered controversial and dangerous, she was imprisoned by the Egyptian government. Upon receiving death threats from Islamist groups, she fled Egypt for the United States and has taught at many prestigious universities. This book is her memoir of her time spent in Qanatir Women's Prison in Egypt.
