This autobiographical novel by Belgian author Amelie Nothomb was awarded the Grand Prix du Roman de l'Academie Francaise the same year it was published. It tells the story of a young woman who takes a job on a one-year contract as a translator at a prestigious Japanese company. What follows is a comical and perplexing dance through Japanese culture as the woman continually gets herself into trouble because she doesn't know her place.
