Two lives witness a devastating upheaval: Tom, an Afghan immigrant to France, leaves his wife to live with his mistress in Amsterdam, only to find she has disappeared. Youssef, a water-carrier in Kabul under Taliban rule, lives with his immigrant brother's wife, only to find feelings developing without him noticing. On the same day, the Taliban destroys two Buddha statues in Afghanistan. Two lives that run parallel and only meet because of the tragedies of exile, memory, love and freedom they evoke.
