Ali al-Wardi was a 20th century Iraqi social scientist who wrote many books on the social history of Iraq. He was a modern, liberal thinker who defied his family's traditional rules to pursue a formal education including a master's degree and a Ph.D from the University of Texas. This is one of his most notable, and controversial, works in which he tackles the historical, and ultimately destructive, power of rulers, the religious clerics who guide them and the common people. He explores the conflict between pre-Islamic Arabs and the current teachings of Islam.
