Muhammad Ali Pasha ruled Egypt from 1805 to 1848. Besides being a prolific military commander, he is well known for his attempts to advance Egyptian knowledge and society by sending young Egyptian students abroad to study at major European instutions of higher education and scientific research. He wanted to modernize Egypt making it possible for her to compete with Europe in the fields of science and engineering. Written by the famed Egyptian geographer and adventurer, His Royal Highness Prince Omar Toussoun.
