Shortlisted for the 2020 IPAF. Alia Mamdouh is an Iraqi writer who left Baghdad in 1982. She has published a short story collection and eight novels, and has been translated into English, French, Italian, and Spanish. This novel explores the relationship between people and the places that have been taken away from them. She imagines her return to Iraq after forty years of exile and observes the many changes that have taken place in the country and society.
